Despite its current economic challenges, Russia is the world’s 7th largest economy by purchasing power parity and has the highest per capita GDP of the BRICS countries. A resource rich nation of 140 million people, Russia rose quickly from Soviet-era isolation to claim an important, if precarious, role on the world’s stage. Early in this century, Russia earned a place in the BRICS group, climbed in the World Bank’s “Doing Business” rankings, and attracted foreign investment at an impressive rate. But, recently, it all came to a halt. The fall of the price of oil, coupled with lingering questions about corruption, continued stratification of wealth, and economic sanctions imposed in the wake of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, all contributed to an economic collapse. A currency crisis is in full swing, and, though Russia remains a geopolitical superpower with a seat at nearly every important table in the world (UN Security Council, G20, WTO, etc.), President Putin has gotten a chilly reception of late. It’s unclear if and when Russia can find some much needed stability, and perhaps recapture the interest of those who were once bullish on a brighter future for Russia.
