Students on program

Students from the Master of Applied Psychology program at the University of Southern California traveled to Tokyo to discover Japan’s unique approach to consumer and retail strategies, e-commerce, and work culture.

The program began at Tokyo Tower, a lasting symbol of Japan’s rapid economic growth after WWII, to get a bird’s eye view of their new home-away-from-home.

Students met with global HR staff members at CyberConnect2. There, the group enjoyed getting a sneak peek into the day-to-day operations and group dynamics of a large Japanese company, having numerous reflective conversations about how the experience compares to the experience of working for a large organization in the U.S.

The cohort also had the opportunity to hear from an executive at Valuence about fashion design marketing and retail strategy, especially in the international luxury market. Students participated in an expansive conversation about global e-commerce and circular fashion and had the chance to network with their international peers.

Outside of their immersive academic engagements, students enjoyed a group dinner and sumo wrestling match at Ryogoku Hana no Mai Edo-Tokyo Museum Mae, a famous local izakaya, and participated in a traditional tea ceremony in Asakusa.

A free day in Tokyo gave the students carte blanche to explore the city’s shrines, museums, and cuisine on their own, and the cohort spent a final day together in Kamakura, the nation’s former capital city. There, the group discovered Japan’s rich Buddhist history at Hasadera and Kotokuin temples.

Our WorldStrides trip was incredible, as always. The team crafted an experience in Japan that broadened students’ perspectives on different cultures while demonstrating the real-world impact of psychology across global contexts.
