Students from the University of North Texas traveled to Japan for a two‑week academic and cultural immersion exploring the foundations of intercultural communication. Engagements across Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka were curated to deepen understanding of the social, cultural, and historical contexts that shape communication across societies.

The students experienced Japanese culture and communication styles through visits to popular temples, museums, and historical structures. Each destination gave these scholars the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the local culture to better their understanding of Japan and the world.

As one of the world’s most innovative metropolitan regions, Tokyo exposed students to a blend of tech‑driven modernity and deeply rooted tradition. They explored pop culture districts like Harajuku, known for its unique fashion and youth scene, and serene temples in Asakusa, each revealing a different layer of Japan’s identity.

Studying pop culture and rhetoric in Japan has been the most enriching, rewarding, and inspiring experience I've ever had in my entire life. From walking down Harajuku’s Takeshita Street, to the thought-provoking lectures taught by Japanese professors, as well as visiting Kamakura, and all the hidden beauties found in Japanese culture that are waiting to be discovered…I will forever be so grateful for this experience.

The final leg of the journey brought the students to Western Japan. Staying in Osaka, they explored the local food culture that has earned the city the title of Japan’s Kitchen. Then a day trip to Kyoto brought the cohort to some of the ancient capital’s 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Through these excursions and their time in Tokyo, the students gained new insights on intercultural communication and Japanese culture as a whole across three very different cities.

It was one of the coolest experiences ever. Getting to explore around historical landmarks and learn so much about a different culture firsthand. It’s one thing to watch videos of people in Japan and another to actually be there and experience it yourself. If you have the chance to go, I highly recommend it.
