Students on program
Austin College students explored Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia for the university’s second annual Asia-Pacific Scholars program meant to give students the opportunity to investigate various geopolitical topics through research and experiential learning. On this six-week program, scholars were paid to conduct research through the lens of these three different countries.
From analyzing public education systems and the evolution of cinema to investigating climate policies and more, the participants gained real-world experience in their areas of study. Each destination gave these scholars the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the local culture to better their understanding of the world.
This summer I had the opportunity to conduct research on a topic that I care deeply about: Public Education. I did a comparative analysis and studied their education systems with the question of who, what, where, when, and why? I am exited to present my research next Spring and shine light on the importance of public education.

Company visits – like Austin College’s visit to Englist, a Taipei-based English education center that focuses on academic writing and critical thinking for students from elementary to high school – allow students to learn from native-speaking instructors and a culturally rich curriculum.
Students also discovered local street food at Taiwan’s iconic Shilin Night Market, delved into the vibrant Filipino culture visiting Manila's museums, and learned from Australian marine-life crews about their eco efforts.
These scholars pursued their individual comparative research interests in each country and also participated in group activities that helped them contextualize their observations. I’m proud of their accomplishments and resilience as they navigated new experiences.
