How does WorldStrides keep students safe while abroad?
WorldStrides maintains one of the most comprehensive student safety networks in the education abroad industry. Key safety infrastructure includes: a dedicated Health & Safety team led by a full-time Head of Health and Safety; local English-speaking staff in 50+ cities worldwide; a 24/7 global emergency response service (WorldAssist); real-time WorldWide Alerts monitoring global events; comprehensive contingency plans for every destination; and partnerships with leading risk management organizations including Exlog. Prior to departure, all students receive a safety orientation, and upon arrival, on-site teams provide local safety briefings. Students, advisors, and emergency contacts can all receive proactive safety updates through the WorldStrides platform.
Does WorldStrides provide 24/7 emergency support?
Yes, WorldStrides provides around-the-clock emergency support through two channels. The WorldAssist team (available 24/7 at 703-933-6143) supports students on custom and faculty-led programs. For all other travelers, the U.S. support line is 512-480-8522 (Monday–Friday, 7am–6pm CT); after hours, students can reach the emergency line at 512-632-9284.
In addition to phone support, students on-site can connect directly with local WorldStrides staff members in their program city. WorldAssist has a presence in 50+ countries and is equipped to handle medical emergencies, security incidents, natural disasters, and other unexpected situations.
What health insurance is provided, and what happens if I get sick abroad?
All WorldStrides program participants are covered by embedded health insurance included in the program fee — students do not need to purchase separate travel medical insurance. Coverage includes emergency medical care, hospitalization, medical evacuation, repatriation, and 24/7 telehealth consultations through WorldStrides' exclusive partnership with The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (Doctors on Call).
Mental health support is also available 24/7 through a partnership with AXA Behavioral Health. If a student becomes ill or injured abroad, they should contact their on-site WorldStrides team member or the WorldAssist emergency line immediately. See full insurance details, insurance claim forms, and instructions on WorldStrides' website.
Is study abroad safe for students with disabilities or medical conditions?
Yes, and WorldStrides is committed to supporting every student's ability to participate in education abroad. WorldStrides' Support for Every Student initiative is designed to ensure students with physical disabilities, chronic health conditions, mental health needs, dietary requirements, or other accessibility considerations can access appropriate accommodations and support. Students are encouraged to disclose relevant needs during the application process so that WorldStrides can work with host institutions and local staff to make necessary arrangements. The Belonging Abroad resource provides additional information for students from underrepresented backgrounds and those with specific support needs.
