The Meeting of Old and New in Edinburgh

Living in Scotland would not be complete without taking a trip to Edinburgh. Located only about an hour east of Glasgow, Scotland’s capital city has much to offer. Whether you are a Harry Potter fan, lover of history, a pub fanatic, or just want to see a new city, Edinburgh is a must see.

I have been to Edinburgh a few times now and each time I always find something new to do! The city itself is split between the Old and New Town, with the Royal Mile and many touristy spots taking up much of the Old Town.

There are so many old stories and tales that are told all over Scotland. One being that of Greyfriars Bobby. This story is about a local watchman and his loyal dog Bobby. It is said that Bobby followed his owner that even after his passing, Bobby would stay by his grave all day. Today, the locals love this story so much that they memorialized them both with a statue of Bobby.

The statue has become a tourist attraction as many try to find Bobby as he watches from across the street of his owner’s grave. Rub his nose for good luck!

From one tale to another – Edinburgh is also known as the home of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling not only wrote the books in a café in Edinburgh, but also got the inspiration for characters such as Tom Riddle, McGonagall, and places like Diagon Alley there.

At the end of the Royal Mile is the infamous Edinburgh Castle. It was once home to royalty such as Mary, Queen of Scots. (If you are a fan of Reign, you KNOW who I am talking about!)

The castle is also home to the Scottish Crown Jewels and a National War Museum.
