TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Klamath Mountains
  • Life off the Grid
  • River Rafting the Klamath River
  • Layover day enjoying the river
  • Ukonom Falls
The Lower Klamath is located in the far northwest corner of California – one of the most remote and least populated areas of the state. While the term "Lower Klamath" can be used to describe any section of the Klamath River from I-5 to below Somes Bar, the most popular stretch is from the town of Happy Camp to Green Rifle. It is in this section where the river cuts a lush canyon through the remote Klamath Mountains, that we will raft and camp over the course 5 days and 4 nights. Throughout the river journey, students will unplug and focus on communication skills, learn what it means to be a member of a team, and all while enjoying the very best of Mother Nature.

Your adventure, day by day

Day 1 : Embark on your Outdoor Education Program
Arrival in California

Our private coach and driver will bring us to Happy Camp, California, where we will meet our guides for transport to the river.

The Klamath Mountains

The Klamath-Siskiyou region is a jumbled mass of rugged mountains, complex terrain features, and varied geology and climate. This unique combination has created one of the world's most biodiverse temperate regions and it is designated as one of only seven Areas of Global Biological Significance on the continent and called by some the "Galapagos of North America". Besides the diversity of plants, it is common to see black bears, deer, turtles, otter, blue heron, and bald eagles. Legend also has it that the region is the home of the elusive Bigfoot and most of the locals have at least one Bigfoot tale.

Life off the grid

Get ready for life off the grid - no cell phones or screens! Enjoy our first afternoon on the Lower Klamath river. For the next four nights, we will be camping beside the river. Upon arrival at camp the first afternoon one of the guides will give the group a quick Camp Orientation. This will give you an idea of how camp works: the kitchen, water and drinks, tent areas, the bathroom, hand wash, library, games, etc.

Included organic meals

All meals from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 5 are included. Food is homemade, diverse, and plentiful. Whenever possible, local and organic produce and free-range meats are used. Appetizers are served nightly followed by delicious dinners and desserts.

Evening

After dinner, we will have a campfire.

Daily reflection and group discussion

"We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience" - John Dewey On every evening of the program, we will set time aside to update our Reflection Journal and share thoughts and impressions that have come to the fore in the course of the day.

Day 2 : On the River
River rafting

This morning, we will continue our river journey. As the Lower Klamath cuts westward, the canyon becomes more and more lush, and numerous side streams and rivers add to the flow.

Evening reflection and campfire chat

How have we had to work as a team to navigate the river?

Day 3 : Outdoor Exploration
Layover day

Enjoy a layover day where the guides find a particularly nice riverside camp spot to stay. We will spend the day hiking, swimming, fishing, and doing educational and team-building activities.

Evening reflection and campfire chat

What does it mean to be an effective member of a team?

Day 4 : Back on the River
Journey westward

Today we travel through the most scenic and secluded miles, including a visit to the rainforest setting of Ukonom Falls, one of the finest side hikes in California. We can swim in the pools below the falls or just lie on the rocks enjoying the sun. Enjoy the pollution-free view of the stars overhead obstructed only by the shadows of the Klamath Mountains.

Final reflection and discussion session

This evening we make the final entries in our Reflection Journal and share some of the most significant observations and perspectives that have taken shape in the course of our travel experience and how these may be most relevant for us all as we return home.

Day 5 : Depart for Home
Farewell!

Enjoy the last stretch of the river this morning as our rewarding and enjoyable Teamwork on the Lower Klamath program comes to an end.
