Our Guide will meet us on our arrival and be available to us 24 hours a day until departure. Guides are certified flat water and white-water canoeing, flat water kayaking, CPR and First Aid, and/or as a Wilderness First Responder.
Meals and accommodationsFor the next five evenings, we will stay in a bunkhouse. You will need to provide your own sleeping bag or sheets, pillows, and towels. All breakfasts, packed lunches, and dinners will be included.

Daily reflection and group discussion"We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience" - John Dewey On every evening of the program, we will set time aside to update our Reflection Journal and share thoughts and impressions that have come to the fore in the course of the day.
What are some effective methods to build an awareness of our natural surroundings?
Morning activityEnjoy a pleasant walk through the woods to our classroom space. Here, we will have an overview discussion of the research that is taking place at the Field Station. We will continue learning with an introduction to Lake Ecology and Limnology, which is the study of inland aquatic ecosystems.
Afternoon activityHave fun with some structured team building activities!

Why is it important to study lakes in remote geographic regions?
Canoeing 101Learn basic canoe techniques and how to paddle.
Water paddle and data collectionExplore the natural and cultural history of the lake by canoe while also taking a range of water quality measurements.
Return to campAfter a full day of paddling and collecting data, we will head back to the camp to share our measurements and hear stories about the history of the surrounding wildlife forest.

Learn about Sustainable Forestry. Discuss the social, environmental, and economic goals of sustainable forestry, then explore and measure different forestry plots.
In the fieldAfter a morning conversation around sustainable forestry, we will visit demonstration cuts to see the practical application of what we have learned.
Visit a white pine plantationThe white pine is commonly known as the tree that built America. Not only did the British treasure the tall, straight stems for ship masts but nearly every structure in the New World was constructed with white pine. We will learn about ongoing research regarding the cultivation and harvesting of white pines. Interact with professionals in environmental science and hear about the career opportunities in the field.
Evening reflection and campfire chatEvaluate tradeoffs among biological sustainability, economic feasibility, and social acceptability with respect to alternative forest management plans.
Receive an overview of Atmospheric and Biogeochemical Monitoring. After learning the basics, we will visit the atmospheric monitoring site.
Afternoon hikeHike 4 miles round trip to a restored fire tower, while hearing about the natural and cultural history of the Adirondacks. Snowshoes are available for winter programs.
Culminating workWe will have some time back at camp to work on our final presentations.
Final reflection and campfire chatPresent our final projects to the rest of the group and discuss how we are taking what we have learned from this experience home to have a positive impact.
