Outdoor Education in New York – Forests & Lakes in the Adirondacks

The Adirondack Mountains are located in Northeastern New York. Much of the region is contained in the Adirondack Park, which includes more than 10,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, and approximately 200,000 acres of old-growth forests. This 5-night Outdoor Education program is based in the heart of the Adirondacks at a field study center staffed by local guides and experts. Students will camp while gaining valuable insight to forest and inland water ecology and taking in the fresh mountain air and breathtaking views.

Meals and accommodations

For the next five evenings, we will stay in a bunkhouse. You will need to provide your own sleeping bag or sheets, pillows, and towels. All breakfasts, packed lunches, and dinners will be included.

Evening

After dinner, we will have a campfire.

Daily reflection and group discussion

"We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience" - John Dewey On every evening of the program, we will set time aside to update our Reflection Journal and share thoughts and impressions that have come to the fore in the course of the day.

Day 2 : The Field Center’s Research & Team Building Activity
Today’s focus

What are some effective methods to build an awareness of our natural surroundings?

Morning activity

Enjoy a pleasant walk through the woods to our classroom space. Here, we will have an overview discussion of the research that is taking place at the Field Station. We will continue learning with an introduction to Lake Ecology and Limnology, which is the study of inland aquatic ecosystems.

Afternoon activity

Have fun with some structured team building activities!

Evening reflection and campfire chat

Discuss the importance of connecting with nature.

Day 3 : Introduction to Paddling & Lake Ecology
Today’s focus

Why is it important to study lakes in remote geographic regions?

Canoeing 101

Learn basic canoe techniques and how to paddle.

Water paddle and data collection

Explore the natural and cultural history of the lake by canoe while also taking a range of water quality measurements.

Return to camp

After a full day of paddling and collecting data, we will head back to the camp to share our measurements and hear stories about the history of the surrounding wildlife forest.

Evening reflection and campfire chat

How do lakes affect us, even if we live in a city?

Day 4 : Sustainable Forestry
Today’s focus

Learn about Sustainable Forestry. Discuss the social, environmental, and economic goals of sustainable forestry, then explore and measure different forestry plots.

In the field

After a morning conversation around sustainable forestry, we will visit demonstration cuts to see the practical application of what we have learned.

Visit a white pine plantation

The white pine is commonly known as the tree that built America. Not only did the British treasure the tall, straight stems for ship masts but nearly every structure in the New World was constructed with white pine. We will learn about ongoing research regarding the cultivation and harvesting of white pines. Interact with professionals in environmental science and hear about the career opportunities in the field.

Evening reflection and campfire chat

Evaluate tradeoffs among biological sustainability, economic feasibility, and social acceptability with respect to alternative forest management plans.

Day 5 : Atmospheric Monitoring
Today’s focus

Receive an overview of Atmospheric and Biogeochemical Monitoring. After learning the basics, we will visit the atmospheric monitoring site.

Afternoon hike

Hike 4 miles round trip to a restored fire tower, while hearing about the natural and cultural history of the Adirondacks. Snowshoes are available for winter programs.

Culminating work

We will have some time back at camp to work on our final presentations.

Final reflection and campfire chat

Present our final projects to the rest of the group and discuss how we are taking what we have learned from this experience home to have a positive impact.
