Antigua, west of the capital, contains preserved Spanish colonial buildings. Lake Atitlán, formed in a massive volcanic crater, is surrounded by coffee fields and villages. Your adventure, day by day

Day 1 : Departure from U.S. - Arrive in Guatemala
Arrive in Antigua

Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It's renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua's 200-year reign as Guatemala's colonial capital. Notable architectural examples include baroque La Merced church. It's an integral part of the city's famous Semana Santa, a holy week with parades and rituals.

Day 2 : Service-Learning & Language Classes
Service project

After eating breakfast with your host family, your Old Town driver and guide will make the rounds to pick everyone up. We'll then head out to our construction sites where you will help with various local projects. The construction projects in Guatemala help develop local communities by constructing classrooms, small clinics, and community centers. Through these infrastructure and renovation projects, you will help improve access to education and healthcare, and promote community solidarity. You will work with your hands, learn basic construction, and help make a real impact at projects for people who truly appreciate your efforts. Note: Construction volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring work gloves, work boots, safety glasses, and clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. It is a good idea to wear a hat and long pants at your project site, and sunscreen is also extremely important.

An approximately hour's drive will take us to the base of Pacaya Volcano, where we will begin our warm up hike for the rest of the volcanoes to follow. Pacaya has been one of Guatemala's most active volcanoes since its recorded history began. It has erupted over 20 times since the Spanish arrived, and has a constantly smoking crater. Arriving below the crater, we will be able to explore the vast dried lava fields and lunar-like landscape. We'll even toast marshmallows in active heat vents!
