Sustainability – Largely relying on natural resources and the ecosystem for health, income, livelihood and basic needs, the Dominican Republic is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change. 16 National Parks and 67 protected areas allow for eco-minded visitors to experience the natural beauty while learning the efforts Dominicans are taking to promote sustainability.
Healthcare – Despite having one of the most advanced healthcare systems in the Caribbean, there remains a significant gap in the quality and availability of care. Students have an excellent opportunity to examine the differences in public, private, and tourist-area hospitals and clinics. The culture of medical care is also of note – students can explore the recent implementation of a 911 system in parts of the country, as well as the differences in typical in-patient care (the patient’s family is often responsible for providing food and assisting with bathing).
Service Learning – With so many ongoing efforts to preserve the ecosystem, the Dominican Republic is an ideal place to pitch in on important projects making a difference for the environment. Build a program around one major community service project, or spend just a few hours getting your hands dirty as part of a larger program focused on a curriculum theme.
Despite the optimism of Dominicans and being one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America, the country’s challenges of marked income inequality, high unemployment, and underemployment are significant. With the rapid and extensive development of the Dominican Republic, the promotion and implementation of ecotourism has become essential to protecting the country’s natural resources. This eco-initiative provides visitors opportunities to appreciate the beauty of the Caribbean nation – from windsurfing in Cabarete to caving in the Pedernales Peninsula.
