Explore the lives and works of Spain’s literary masters in the land that made them who they are. Walk in the footsteps of Cervantes, Miguel de Unamuno, Federico Garcia Lorca, and even Ernest Hemingway (not a native, but a one-time resident) as you see some of the sites featured in their famous works and consider the lives of characters like Don Quixote and his sweetheart Dulcinea.
From museums to concert halls and on the streets too, the art of Spain is deeply ingrained in its culture. Visit the works of the masters (Goya, Velasquez, and others) in the Prado, learn about the life and work of the immortal Picasso, and wander the incredible home, cathedral, and park designed by Antonin Gaudí in Barcelona. Consider lesser known wonders as well in Toledo, Salamanca, Bilbao, or in the southern regions where Islamic influences are strong.

It has, at times, been a rocky road. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Spanish Empire dominated broad regions of Europe and the New World, thriving under the rule of the Hapsburgs. When this power waned, Spain entered a darker period, mired in turmoil, civil war, and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. It wasn’t until Franco’s death in 1975 that Spain truly joined the modern international community. Recently, economic crisis has battered the Spanish economy, but it has emerged with a stronger outlook than many of its neighbors. Exports have been growing rapidly since the Eurozone crisis, and Spain’s automotive sector is booming. Unfortunately, unemployment remains a major concern, particularly among young people who have been leaving their homeland in disturbing numbers. Spain must address its residual issues from the crisis in order to enter another Golden Age.
