Madrid - 4 days

Madrid Walking Guided Tour

During your stay in Madrid, you will expand your knowledge of Spanish history, culture, and politics. Let's begin the trip with a walking tour of Habsburg Madrid, known to Spaniards as Madrid de los Austrias, and which includes the Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace, Plaza de Oriente, Plaza de la Villa, Plaza Mayor, and some of the city’s oldest streets. (no entrances required,whisper headset included)

Del Prado Museum Guided Visit

Guided tour of one of Madrid’s preeminent art museums, the Prado Museum. Expert tour guides and/or art historians introduce students to some of the masterworks of el Greco, Velázquez and Goya and the movements and periods with which they are associated. (entrance and whisper headsets included)

Excursion to Valle de los Caidos Guided Tour

Built in the years following the civil war, the Valley of the Fallen monument that was erected during the Francoist regime to commemorate those who died during the Spanish Civil War. It served as the burial place of Franco's remains from his death in November 1975 until his exhumation in 2019, as a result of efforts to remove all public veneration of his dictatorship, and following a long and controversial legal process. Sevilla - 3 days

Cooking Class

3 hour hands-on Spanish cooking class consisting in 3 course menu: cold soup, entree and main dish. During the class, guests have the chance to get involved in the preparation of the dishes, as classes are designed for both novice and experienced cooks that will be able to learn and develop new techniques and skills. (fee included)

Cathedral and Alcazar Guided Visit

Enjoy a tour of the Cathedral of Seville and the Alcazar. Known for being the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, the Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Santa Maria de la Sede) and its bell tower (La Giralda) took over a century to build and serves as the burial site of Christopher Columbus and his son. The Real Alcázar de Sevilla served as a royal palace for Moorish kings who occupied Spain and is known for its breathtaking palaces, gardens and walls. Visit el patio de los naranjos (Patio of the Orange Trees), the Cathedral of the Seville, and the Giralda tower while you gain an appreciation for Seville’s unique religious history. The patio de los naranjos and Visigothic fountain used by Muslims of the Middle Ages to perform ritual ablutions before praying. Admire the cathedral's original bell tower (La Giralda), which is crowned by a bronze weathervane symbolizing Faith. Next, visit the Cathedral of the Seville, which is largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the biggest altarpiece in the world that is dedicated to the cathedral’s patron saint (Santa Maria de la Sede). Flamenco Show

Watch a Flamenco performance and appreciate the traditional Spanish folk music and dance that originated in the Andalucía region around 500 years ago! (entrance to show included)

Cadiz Guided Day Trip

Founded 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians, Cádiz is the oldest city in Western Europe. This peninsula, right on the Andalusian Atlantic coast, has been able to preserve an important historical legacy - the result of its commercial importance - together with excellent beaches and an exquisite regional cuisine. Enjoy some free time at the beach. (no entrances required)

Cordoba - 1 day

Madinat al-Zahra Guided Visit

Discover the ruins of Medina Azahara on this guided tour through the "Brilliant Town." Explore the remains of a vast Arab Muslim city built by Abd-ar-Rahman III al-Nasir in the 10th-century. Located on the western outskirts of Cordoba, Medina Azahara was a medieval town and the de facto capital of al-Andalus, or Muslim Spain. Walk around the ancient palace and learn about how it once served as the heart of administration and government.

Cordoba Guided City Tour

Hidden in the heart of the historic center of Córdoba, we find the best-preserved synagogue in Andalucía, due to the stunning quality of the inscriptions covering its walls, among other things. After the expulsion of the Jews from the territory, this building became a hospital, a chapel and a kinder garden until 1884, when the finding of a series of inscriptions led to a thorough restoration process. This building is located very close to the Mosque-Cathedral and the Alcazar of Córdoba, which clearly shows the coexistence of the different religions and civilizations in the city throughout history. Granada - 1 day

Alhambra Guided Tour

Take a tour of the infamous Moorish palace and fortress complex known as the Alhambra. Appreciate the architecture and attention to detail of some of the finest Islamic buildings in Europe. (entrance and whisper headsets included)

Program Leaders
Dr. Sarah J. Scott received her Ph.D. in the History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. She has been at Wagner since 2007 and as a Professor with specialty in Ancient Near Eastern Art History, Dr. Scott teaches a range of courses that encompasses the broader Mediterranean and Middle Eastern visual worlds including Ancient Middle Eastern, Egyptian, Islamic, Bronze Age, Greek, and Roman Art and Architecture. Her classes actively utilize museums in New York City as an extension of the classroom. Dr. Scott’s area of scholarship in Ancient Near Eastern Art engages with issues surrounding the intersection of art and writing in fourth and early third millennium BCE southern Mesopotamia, and how cylinder seal imagery functioned in temple economies.

Dr. Felicia J. Ruff received her doctorate in Theatre History from the Graduate Center of CUNY, having focused on 19th century theatre, particularly Melodrama. She has received grants for and has published extensively on Wilde Studies, including book chapters: "The Transgressive Prop; or, Oscar Wilde's E(a)rnest Signifier" and "Oscar Wilde, the Erotique-Grotesque, and Modernist Spectacle." In addition she has published in Theatre Symposium: Comedy Tonight and Theatre Journal and the Encyclopedia of Broadway and American Culture. As Professor at Wagner she is a member of the First Year Program, where she teaches with studio artist Prof. Jenny Toth. She also teaches Theatre History; Script Analysis; Seminars in Modernism, Elizabethan Theatre, Oscar Wilde, and Greek Theatre, Witchcraft and Theatre, Disabilities and Theatre, among others.
