Where I’d Rather Be – Warm Weather Winter Travel

As the temperatures teeter between ridiculously cold and seasonably cold and the snow continues to pile on down, I find my mind wandering to far-off destinations. While traveling in winter months has its challenges (I’m talking about you, airports!) it might just be worth the potential headaches to escape this arctic abyss. So here is a round up of some tantalizing warm weather locales that will make you want to whip out your flip-flops and even expose those tan-less legs.

A trip to Australia might just be the trick to beat those winter blues. As their seasons are opposite ours, it’s summer there! If you’re feeling bathing suit ready, take a snorkel expedition around the Great Barrier Reef or surf at Bondi Beach in Sydney. If you’re more interested in Australia’s history, experience Aboriginal culture at Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and learn how to play the didgeridoo or throw a boomerang. Between the great weather and even more interesting local sites and culture, isn’t it worth a 20 hour flight?

With daily highs of 82 degrees in January, you can be sure to experience sunshine on your trip to Costa Rica. Delve into the lush rain forests of Tortuguero to navigate its varied canals and visit with the local green sea turtles. Or aim high and explore Monteverde Cloud Forest’s sky high suspension bridges or zoom through on a canopy zip-line. Costa Rica offers the perfect mix of biology and adventure!

monk in Cambodia

Although January is peak season in Cambodia, its the perfect time to visit with low humidity and cooling breezes. Visiting this region outside of our winter means oppressive temperatures and high humidity. Cambodia offers some of the most amazing temples in the world including the 8th Wonder of the Ancient World – Angkor Wat. Cambodia is also well-known for its bustling local markets and delicious street food and ingredients. If you’d like some inner peace and a piece of some BBQ snake, Cambodia awaits!

WorldStrides travelers in Athens

I know Europe doesn’t sound like the ideal location to travel in the winter, but Athens is just far enough south that with 55 degree temperatures, it’s comfortable compared to what we’re used to. Not to mention, it’s a very cost effective time of year to travel as it is the off-season. Once you have those warm Mediterranean breezes on your face and are viewing some amazing ancient architecture (which you can actually see without the crowds) you’ll be quite happy in your light sweater.
