Federal Hall National Memorial
When New York was chosen as the site of our nation’s first capital, a Federal building was needed. New Yorkers turned to Pierre L’Enfant, the designer of Washington, D.C., to reconstruct City Hall into Federal Hall. Congress met in this building for a little over a year before the capital was moved to Philadelphia.
Interesting Facts:
- The building standing today is not the original hall. The originial was torn down in 1812.
- The Federal Hall National Memorial was built in 1842 and contains exhibits on President Washington’s inauguration in 1789 and what life was like in New York at the time.
