Inaugural Parade

Following the conclusion of the swearing-in ceremonies, the Inaugural Parade makes its way down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. A procession of military units, schools, and public organizations take center stage in this historic and much-anticipated parade. The newly inaugurated president, vice president, their families, and special guests view the inaugural festivities from a special presidential viewing stand, specially built and enclosed for the January event.

Interesting Facts:

  • The Inaugural Parade has been a presidential tradition since George Washington took the first oath of office in 1789.
  • In 1873, President Grant started the tradition of viewing the parade procession from the White House after the inauguration ceremonies, rather than on the way to the swearing-in ceremonies.
  • In 1921, President Warren Harding became the very first president to ride in the procession in an automobile.
