While there is only one global ocean, the vast body of water that covers 71 percent of Earth is geographically divided into distinct regions. The U.S. recognizes five named oceans: Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern.
- The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are known as the three major oceans.
- More than 50% of all species on Earth are found under the ocean
- In the US alone, there are over 95,000 miles of shoreline. More than half of the US population lives within 50 miles of the coast, called the “coastal zone”.
