Two Declarations in 1776
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important and influential documents in American history. But, did you know that there was also a “Declaration of Dependence”? In 1776, the same year that the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 Americans, over 200 colonial New Yorkers signed the not-so-famous Declaration of Dependence. These particular New Yorkers were part of the Loyalist party, which meant that they remained faithful to King George III of Great Britain. One of the more prominent Loyalists was Frederick Philipse III, resident of the mansion known today as Philipse Manor Hall. Frederick Philipse III and his family lived in luxury while defending the British Crown, but his loyalties were so strong that George Washington ordered him to be arrested in 1776. He and his family later fled to England and his mansion was confiscated by the state of New York and later auctioned off.
