Teach Through Educational Travel: Guards in Syntagma Square, Athens

In the center of Athens is a very important public area, called Syntagma Square. It is also known as Constitution Square, since the Parliament Building is located there. There is also a beautiful garden, with a beautiful marble fountain in the center, and many benches upon which to rest and take a break from the bustle of Athens. It’s a meeting point for many Athenians, as the square is bounded by office buildings, cafes, banks, and hotels.

  • In Syntagma Square is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Read of the history of this monument and discuss why it is so important for countries to honor those who served their country. How does this monument reflect the Greek people?

  • Part of tradition is tied to ritual. At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the guards are changed hourly. Watch this video and reflect on the importance of ritual in maintaining a country’s culture and history.
