Rise Up, Take Action: How to Support the LGBTQIA+ Community

At WorldStrides, we strive to promote safe spaces where our participants feel comfortable speaking up and openly about their identity, expression, and experiences. WorldStrides policies, such as our Inclusive Housing Policy and WorldStrides View on Gender Identity and Gender Expression policy are designed to foster inclusivity for our participants, chaperones, and program leaders through the intentional creation of safe spaces, program resources, and clear conduct expectations so all can feel a sense of belonging and community throughout their WorldStrides program. The month of April honors a significant part of WorldStrides community as it recognizes the impact that bullying and harassment has on the LGBTQIA+ community and advocates for allies to uplift through actions, rather than words.

International Day of Pink- April 10, 2024

Since 2007, Canada has promoted International Day of Pink each year as a way for individuals to stand up and advocate against harmful bullying and homophobia. By wearing pink, we are reminded of the importance that community and a sense of belonging can have, especially for those who feel they have historically lacked visibility for themselves or their community.

Day of (No) Silence – April 12, 2024

There are many ways to stand up against discrimination, harassment, and bullying. This inclusive day not only promotes amplifying your voice to advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and sharing stories and experiences but also provides the opportunity for those who choose to support in another way- by remaining silent. Regardless of how comfortable you might feel, there is a way in which you can stand in solidary and support creating safe spaces and communities for all expressions, identities, and experiences.

What do these days have in common? They both provide meaningful opportunities to visibly display allyship and call out behaviors that are harmful to this community. They both remind us of the importance of inclusivity, kindness, and standing up against discrimination in all its forms.

Whether you are speaking out, wearing pink, or showing support, your actions matter; you can make a positive impact.

How else can I make a difference?

• Writing down your history and experiences for others
• Sharing your story on social media
• Registering to vote and showing up in the polls
• Volunteering at local community centers or for community organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ community
• Make a financial donation to an organization that is important to you
• Reflecting on the impact of your words and actions to other’s well-being
• See something, say something. Use your voice to uplift and support others
