Pride 2020: Virtual Celebrations Around the Globe

It’s Pride Month! In 1995, the month of June was designated as Pride Month to honor the LGBTQIA+ community and to also honor the Stonewall riots that occurred in June of 1969 in Manhattan. These riots were the beginning of the Gay Rights Movement in the United States.

Typically, cities around the world celebrate Pride month with in-person activities, such as parades, campaigns, picnics, parties, workshops, and concerts. This year, however, Pride has gone fully digital! Here are a few events celebrating Pride Month that you can attend from the comfort of your home.

Global Pride 2020

When:  June 27

Time: 24-hour Livestream
Over 300 million viewers are expected to tune in to Global Pride. Artists such as Pabllo Vittar from Brazil, President Carlos Alvarado Quesada of Costa Rica, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel, and the first openly gay prince, Manvendra Singh Gohil of India, are expected to make appearances. In addition, performances by Olivia Newton-John, Deborah Cox, and the Dixie Chicks are scheduled.

NYC Pride

When:  June 28

Time: 12pm to 2pm EST
2020 marks the half-century anniversary of NYC’s inaugural Pride March in 1970. The virtual event will be a salute to workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hosted by Carson Kressley and Dan Levy, this event will air on ABC7 and also through live stream through ABC7s website. San Francisco Pride

One of the largest LGBTQ+ events in the U.S, festivities will include a 13-hour suite of live and pre-recorded musical performances, such as headliner Big Freedia, greetings from elected officials and reflections on 50 years of Pride.

L.A. Pride

When: June 27

Time: 11pm
This 90 minute online special will be available on ABC7, as well as streamed online. This event will highlight local unsung heroes, queer culture, and community activists, including guests such as Lance Bass, The Pussycat Dolls, and Trixie Mattel.

Toronto Pride

When:  June 28

Toronto Pride will be hosting a virtual Pride parade. To participate, you’ll need to register by June 20^th using the web link above. The website also provides information on how you can get more involved.

Digital outlet ‘Them’ will be hosting a series of events that include both musical acts and star appearances. Performances by Princess Nokia, Tegan & Sara, and Hayley Kiyoko are expected with appearances by Cynthia Nixon, Naomi Campbell, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ross Matthews.

Pride Barcelona

When: June 25 through 27

Barcelona hosts one of the most popular pride celebrations in Europe, and this year, they’re turning it to the digital space.

Dublin Digital Pride Festival & Parade

When:  June 18 through June 28

Time: 9am Interactive virtual parade, 2pm concert on June 28
Dublin’s annual celebration will host virtual walking tours, workshops, political debates, and an interactive virtual pride parade.

Bi Pride UK

When: June 20
Where: Streaming on Twitch
Time: 1pm to 5pm
This virtual event will be a celebration of bi voices. Tune in to watch thought-provoking discussion panels and enjoy entertainment from a diverse array of performers. Then turn the volume up for a DJ’ed after party!
