New Program Spotlight: Boston – East Coast STEM
Boston is famous worldwide for its role in advancing America’s revolution…but you know what else Boston is famous for? Advancing science at some of the world’s best institutions! Our new Boston STEM trip highlights include visiting the MIT Nuclear Reactor Lab, StageOne Robotics and Coding Helicopter Workshop, MIT Museum and the Franklin Park Zoo. Take a peek at what students can experience on the Boston – East Coast STEM program.
Day 1: Travel to Boston and meet your WorldStrides representative and get ready to experience Boston like never before!
Duck, duck, boat tour! The unique and fact-filled Duck Boat Tour shows off all the sites of Boston from both the city streets and the Charles River. That’s right, the WWII-style amphibious vehicle travels both in water and on land!
Day 2: After breakfast, head over the Fenway Park for a STEM tour. The educational behind-the-scenes tour of the famous baseball stadium will allow students to consider both the history and the STEM connections between the beloved landmark and the game of baseball.
End the knowledge-filled day by exploring Quincy Market. This historic local hangout is filled with shops, stalls, food, and performance artists for all to enjoy.
Day 3: After a fuel-filled breakfast, power up at the StageOne Robotics and Coding Helicopter Workshop. In this program designed and operated by MIT PhD graduates, students will have the opportunity to collaborate on both hardware and software design by building circuitry and writing software together. Utilizing an Arduino microprocessor as the base, they will create, program, and fly a helicopter that they build in small groups.
Get up close and personal with the animals at the Franklin Park Zoo during a behind-the-scenes tour. Students will also participate in a workshop with zoo biologists focused on either endangered species or exhibit design.
Attention gamers! The next stop is Boda Borg, where students will experience “questing” in a real-world gaming environment. Participants will tackle mental and physical challenges in this escape room-like task.
Day 4: While visiting MIT, your tour will include one of the following: The Nuclear Reactor Lab, home of the second largest university research reactor in the United States, or the Lincoln Lab, a federally funded research and development laboratory for the U.S. Department of Defense that collaborates with scientists and engineers at MIT.
Continue the MIT visit with a hands-on tour of the MIT Museum Sail into Engineering during which students will build and test their own model boats using modern technologies like computer-aided design and laser cutting. During the process, explore the methods that Nathanael Herreshoff used to design and build over 2,000 boats, including five America’s Cup winning yachts at the turn of the 20th century.
Our newest STEM programs include New York City and Boston trips. Want to experience it all in one trip? Check out the NYC & Boston – East Coast STEM itinerary and don’t miss anything both these destinations have to offer young scientific minds.
