Eighth grade history teacher shares why he travels with students

When it comes to student educational travel, teachers are our most valuable resource. It is the teachers who understand the impact of travel on their students’ lives, and the teacher who begins the process of planning a trip of a lifetime.

At WorldStrides, we work hand-in-hand with our teachers to ensure the best program possible for them and their students. Eighth grade history teacher Dave M. traveled to the east coast with us last year and is in the midst of planning his next trip with WorldStrides. We asked him a few questions about his experience with WorldStrides and student educational travel. Here’s what he had to say:

WorldStrides:  What’s the one word you would use to describe your trip?

Dave M.:  I can be difficult to please, but the trip exceeded my expectations.

WS: What are some of the things your students are still talking about?

Dave M.: They are still talking about how remarkable it is to experience these historic sites first-hand and how enjoyable it is to travel with friends.

WorldStrides: 20 years from now, what’s the thing your students (or you) will still remember?

Dave M.: I will remember the National Park Service guide in Independence Hall asking the group if anyone knew the opening words to the Declaration of Independence and all of my students reciting the preamble flawlessly, in unison, and to the amazement of the guide and other visitors in our group.

WorldStrides:  What prompted you to want to take your kids on a trip?  How did you get started?  Did it turn out like you thought it would?  Is there anything you would do differently?

Dave M.: My wife and I have 5 children and traveled to the east coast in 2002 to give our kids the experience of exploring their American heritage first-hand.  We wanted them to see, feel, touch, and completely absorb United States history and culture so they would be in a position of protecting and defending America’s founding principles whenever necessary. Upon arriving home, I absolutely knew that I wanted to give my eighth grade students the same experience.

WorldStrides:  What advice would you give other first time teachers who are thinking about traveling with their students?

Dave M.: If you’re thinking about student travel, call WorldStrides first. They are professional, friendly, attentive, organized, and really enjoy people—especially kids.  It is a classy organization whose ideals and values consistently match those of the organization I represent.
