Custom University Travel to Rwanda

Rwanda is a transformed nation in the two decades following the genocide that claimed more than 800,000 lives. With a concerted effort to confront the past, Rwanda has become one of the top locations in Africa for business and has pulled many of its people out of poverty. Custom university travel to Rwanda studies a history that happened not so long ago and yet, sometimes, feels worlds away.

Topics to Explore

In Rwanda, you might choose to explore the following topics:

Service Learning

Driven by generous levels of foreign aid, Rwanda has embarked on an aggressive development program, called Rwanda Vision 2020, which aims to turn Rwanda into a middle-income, knowledge-based economy by the year 2020. Spend several days contributing to poverty-reduction campaigns through hands-on projects at secondary schools, health centers, or at umurenge sites, where the Rwandan government is focusing its efforts.

Business Consulting

In many ways, Rwanda is an ideal case study for understanding the dynamics of emerging markets. Explore the government policies that have driven development, from simplifying the permit-application process to promoting micro-finance. Work directly with a company on a customized project to develop their business—collaborate with coffee farmers on the refinement of their production chain, for example, or help an entrepreneur expand his/her business.

Women in Leadership/Politics

In the wake of its 1994 genocide, Rwanda’s reconstructed government has surpassed all other nations in its inclusion of women. A remarkable 64% of its legislators are women—the highest percentage in the world. Half of the Supreme Court justices are female, too, and outside government, women have risen to the top of the private sector in significant numbers. Study this transformation and its impact on a society rebuilding after tragedy.

Destination Overview

Rwanda Now

Rwanda seeks to become, in the aspirational words of President Paul Kagame, “the Singapore of Central Africa,” though landlocked Rwanda has few of the geographical advantages that Singapore enjoys. With massive investments in education, infrastructure, and the communications industry, Kagame’s administration is hoping to turn Rwanda into a crucial regional hub, attracting foreign investment and securing business connections from its resource-rich neighbors. While the memory of the 1994 genocide will certainly persist for some time, Rwanda is working hard to shake free of its shadow and move quickly toward a brighter future.
