Overview
Enhance your students’ Spanish skills on a culturally immersive tour to Salamanca. Known as the center of pure Castilian Spanish, this friendly and historic city offers the perfect setting for language learning. Students will take Spanish language and culture classes, practice their skills while exploring Salamanca’s unique architecture and Segovia’s fairy-tale castle, and experience daily life through homestays with local families.

Arrive in Madrid
Meet your resident director and travel to Salamanca
Health & safety program orientation
Participate in an orientation session covering health, safety, and program expectations.
Begin homestay
Daily reflection and group discussion
“We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.” – John Dewey. Each evening of the program, time will be set aside to update your Reflection Journal and share the thoughts and impressions that emerged during the day.
Day 3
Spanish language and culture classes
We will have the opportunity to participate in language classes that will enhance our cultural understanding and linguistic skills.
Salamanca Tour Director-led walking tour
The past and present meet in Salamanca. Like many great medieval cities, Salamanca has a multitude of towering cathedrals and convents. Yet, the city’s university students give it a hip, international vibe. One of the leading institutions of Europe, the university has attracted countless Spanish intellectuals, including Antonia de Nebrija and Miguel de Unamuno.

Salamanca guided sightseeing tour

Travel to Santander
Travel approximately 4 hours north of Salamanca to Santander, on the shores of the Bay of Biscay.

Santander Tour Director-led sightseeing
We will take a walking tour around Santander. The Palacio de la Magdalena, once the royal summer residence, lies at the mouth of the Bay of Santander on the rocky La Magdalena Peninsula. West, the city center is home to the Catedral de Santander, with its octagonal cupola and Gothic cloister. Nearby, the Paseo de Pereda promenade runs along one side of the Jardines de Pereda gardens.
Santander beach time
Spend time at one of Santander's beautiful beaches.
Surf lesson
Northern Spain is famous for its surfing. Learn the basics in a surf lesson.
Overnight in hotel
Day 7
Palacio de la Magdalena visit
Explore the beautifully preserved rooms and gardens of the palace. Learn about the cultural and historical significance of this iconic landmark while enjoying breathtaking views of the Bay of Biscay.
Travel to Salamanca via Santillana del Mar
Santillana del Mar is a charming town which has been declared a national monument by the government of Spain. Many of its homes were built after the 18th century, but you can also find some that date back to the 9th century. Santillana is an aristocratic city that reflects the noble origin of the families who used to live there.

Cooking class
Today, we will participate in a cooking class, where we will be able to learn more about traditional Spanish cuisine.
Day 10

Flamenco lesson
Learn how to dance Flamenco from local dancers in a lesson.
Day 11
Spanish language and culture classes
We will have the opportunity to participate in language classes that will enhance our cultural understanding and linguistic skills.
Day 12
Spanish language and culture classes
We will have the opportunity to participate in language classes that will enhance our cultural understanding and linguistic skills.
Salamanca Cathedral (Old & New) visit
Explore the Catedral Vieja and the Catedral Nueva. Unusually, the two cathedrals are built side-by-side and offer a contrast in styles, ranging from Baroque to Romanesque to Renaissance. In the Old Cathedral, a 53-panel altarpiece painted by Nicolas Florentino frames the statue of Salamanca’s patron saint, the 12th century Virgen de la Vega. After departing the cathedrals, our walk continues through Salamanca’s old quarter to the 1st century Puente Romano, the Convento de las Duenas, the Iglesia-Convento de San Esteban, and the magnificent Torre del Clavero.

Final reflection and group discussion
This evening, students make their final entries in their Reflection Journals, sharing key observations and perspectives gained throughout their travel experience and considering how these insights will remain relevant as they return home.
