Overview
This community engagement and leadership program takes you from vast savannahs and deserts to beautiful coral reefs, rainforests, and mountains. Kenya's diversity and beauty offers you the opportunity to explore and get a true taste of Africa away from the well-trodden backpacker trails. Our field study center is a joint venture with the community, where students can work side by side with locals to achieve their service-work goals. This cultural immersion has an enduring educational impact on students, who can develop and implement real-world solutions around the issues they've only explored in class.

Itinyi and Kale communities and project background
Kale Primary School has 660 students enrolled but the facilities are woefully inadequate with only 11 classrooms and nine teachers. The infrastructure and educational facilities are in disrepair, and the classroom foundations are at risk of collapse due to erosion from seasonal flooding. There are currently 550 students enrolled at Itinyi Primary School, located in the Southern Eastern Kenya. The facilities are woefully inadequate and under-resourced; there are only nine functioning classrooms and eight teachers. The community is unable to raise funds needed for the school upkeep and expansion, despite receiving limited government funding. Additionally, literacy levels among the poor are in the lower bracket in Kenya, with as few as 37 per cent of females possessing basic literacy skills. The camp is situated in the heart of the picturesque local village, where you will experience authentic African culture and hospitality that will make you want to stay forever. Accommodation consists of traditional bandas & tents with comfy mattresses & bedding. Long drop toilets, showers & sinks. While at camp, three healthy, well-balanced and tasty meals will be provided daily. For example, toast, sausage and omelette for breakfast; pasta, chicken stew/curry with chapatis and vegetables for lunch/dinner, and fruit. The signature dish is called Pilau (Swahili local food).

Day 3
Introduction to Itinyi and Kale Primary Schools volunteer projects
Take the short drive to Itinyi or Kale Primary School where students will be given a briefing on daily school life and an overview of the ongoing projects. Without access to a good quality education, children don't get a fair chance in life. A good school environment can open the doors to fulfilling, productive and well-paid employment, helping to break the cycle of poverty. In Camp Tsavo we are working in collaboration with the surrounding community and an important part of the process of identifying the group’s goals is a broader understanding of the problems faced by the area and our combined aims in tackling them. Through that understanding, leading to goal identification and student led planning, the group starts to create and then work towards their own objectives. The group then has some time to think deeply about their goals for the week; in a framed, student led discussion forum.
