Overview
Step out of the modern day and into the 17th and 18th centuries at Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg. Students will follow clues and participate in hands-on experiences with tradespeople at the world’s largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg. In Jamestown, our nation’s first permanent settlement, they’ll discover what life was like in 1607. They’ll board replicas of the original English ships and explore a recreation of the English settlement and a Native American village.

Day 1
Travel to Williamsburg, VA
Lunch
Jamestown Glasshouse visit
Watch skilled artisans craft beautiful glass pieces using techniques from the early 17th century and explore fascinating exhibits on the history of glassmaking and its importance to early American settlements.
Jamestown Settlement guided tour
Journey through the early days of America’s first English colony as you explore interactive exhibits, life-size replicas of 17th-century ships, the reconstructed fort, and hear stories about the settlers and Powhatan people.

Experience a ghost tour or another program that brings 18th-century colonial life to light.
Day 2

Williamsburg full-day study visit
Enjoy a fast-paced walking tour of Colonial Williamsburg. This hands-on exploration will provide your students with clues leading them to various colonial trade shops. Students will collaborate and think creatively to solve each clue, and then enter the trade shops to participate in reenactments and learn about everyday life in 18th-century Williamsburg.
Lunch
Williamsburg full-day study visit continued
Continue your visit with a stop at the Governor’s Palace, home to seven Royal Governors and Virginia's first two governors of—Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. Participate in Revolutionary City, an interactive “street theatre,” visit Great Hopes Plantation, a “middling” farm, and experience different aspects of colonial life as you see the jail, Capitol, and post office.

Day 3

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry
Ferry The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry crosses the James River between James City County and Surry County.
Bacon's Castle
Bacon's Castle Step back in time with a tour of this 17th-century architectural gem that was aptly named after the notorious Nathaniel Bacon and the rebellion he led.
Lunch
Freedom Park and Williamsburg Botanical Gardens
At Freedom Park, students explore nature trails and wildlife while learning about Virginia’s ecosystems. They will also discover the legacy of one of America’s earliest free Black settlements. At the Botanical Garden, hands-on programs highlight native plants and pollinator habitats.

Day 4

Yorktown Victory Center
Learn about life in Virginia during the Revolutionary War by visiting a Continental Army encampment, galleries, and farmstead.
Yorktown Battlefield tour
Visit the actual location where the British surrendered to General Washington’s army—arguably the most decisive event of the American Revolution. Walk to Cornwallis’ cave on the riverfront and through the town, where houses still bear the marks of 18th-century musket balls.
