Topics to Explore

In Taiwan, you might choose to explore some of the following topics:

Trade

Given its geopolitical and economic closeness with China, Taiwan occupies a unique space in the global economy, successfully navigating diplomatic isolation and a delicate relationship with the mainland. Explore the opportunities and challenges Taiwan faces as a powerhouse democracy situated right off the coast of an economic giant, while maintaining its global status as a capitalist champion.

Energy

Taiwan depends on imports for nearly 98% of total energy consumption. Although strategically located adjacent to major ocean transportation channels, including the Taiwan Strait, the security concern for dependence remains. Study how business leaders have adapted to accommodate a lack of domestic natural resources, while still remaining competitive internationally.

Economic Trends

As one of the most densely populated territories in the world, successful Taiwanese businesses must balance the exorbitant cost of real estate, with a rapidly aging population. Consider the long-term implications of a high national savings rate, and the financial burden on the next generation from a low population replacement rate.

Destination Overview

Spotlight on Taiwan

Despite its diplomatic difficulties, Taiwan has grown tremendously as one of Asia’s “Tiger Economies” along with Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong. It is a major exporter of electronics and other high-tech products, and has strong machinery and petrochemical industries. The island, which floats in the South China Sea just over 100 miles from mainland China, has the fifth-largest foreign reserves in the world and runs a trade surplus, mostly from its surplus with China.

The vast terrain of Taroko National Park is one of Taiwan’s most famous destinations, and is filled with waterfalls, rock tunnels and trails overlooking crystal blue waters. Taroko’s establishment as a national park in 1986 signified the advancement of the environmental protection movement in Taiwan.

As it navigates its precarious political and economic position, Taiwan continues to exhibit strength. This tiny island is one to watch.
