Topics to Explore

In Iceland, you might choose to explore some of the following topics:

Industrial Investment

Thanks to the abundant green energy available in Iceland, the country has become a growing hub of industrial investment. From off-shore oil exploration to information technology, to tourism and manufacturing, Iceland has an increasingly robust and diverse economy to offer to foreign (and domestic) investment.

Locally-grown Fare

For centuries, Icelanders used smoking, pickling, or drying methods to preserve their foodstuffs during the harsh, long winters. In this country of contrasts, Icelandic cuisine is no different. Examine how Iceland is still very much self-sufficient when it comes to food production. Delve in to the unique cuisine of Iceland, visit a geothermal greenhouse, and tour a dairy to see how Skyr is made and marketed.

Renewable Energy

Iceland is synonymous with renewable energy – in fact, Reykjavik’s motto is “pure energy”. Geothermal power facilities account for 25% of the country’s electricity production, while 72% is generated through hydroelectric power stations. Tour a power plant located along an active volcanic ridge to learn how hot-water is processed for geothermal energy.

Viking Heritage

Icelanders are immensely proud of their Viking heritage, and have maintained many of the original tales and traditions by passing them down through generations. Explore traditional Icelandic arts such as weaving, silversmithing, and wood carving. Walk in the footsteps of the original Norse settlers, read some of the sagas and eddic poetry, and be sure to keep an eye out for the storied elfin folk!

Spotlight on Iceland

Destination Overview

View of Reykjavik - Reykjavik, Iceland

The services sector and tourism have experienced unprecedented growth in recent years – reaching 20% annually. With its young work force (40% of the population is aged 25-54), and a low inflation rate (1.6%), Iceland appears poised to maintain its well-earned economic growth.

Prior to the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland was on its way to becoming one of the most prosperous countries in the world. Though it suffered a crippling recession and massive emigration, Iceland has made leaps and bounds towards a full economic recovery. By allowing its currency (the krona) to collapse during the financial crisis, Iceland made itself more competitive, causing it to rebound more rapidly than many other European countries. This isolated island nation, with its quickly diversifying economy, is certainly one to watch.
