Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo
Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is home to eight habitat areas, including African, Asian, and Australian animals, primates, an aquatic center, and several bird exhibits. Visitors can feed giraffes and rhinos, ride llamas, pet goats and stingrays, and walk through aviaries. These unique hands-on learning experiences help to make this one of the best zoos in the country.
Interesting Facts:
- Tampa’s first zoo was established in the late 1930s and consisted of such highlights as raccoons. In 1957, the animals were moved to Lowry Park, which was larger and more centrally located in the Tampa area.
- Over the years, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has celebrated many accomplishments, including the births of an African elephant calf in 2005 and an Indian rhino calf in 2009. It is also the first wildlife institution in North America (and the second in the world) to hatch a rare African shoebill stork chick, which is now fully grown and doing well.
