Temple Sings: 2023 Workshop Sessions

Singing in the Oral Tradition

Led by: Paul Rardin

Most singing around the world is taught by oral tradition – never written down, only shared in real time from generation to generation. Learn folk songs from Nigeria, South Africa, and other countries in this energizing session. Bring your recording devices – you will want to remember this music to teach to your own choirs!

Women Composers and Their Music

Led by: Mitos Andaya Hart

Explore some of music history’s great women composers and their choral music. Despite societal norms discouraging them, Isabella Leonarda, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Clara Schumann, and many others managed to write beautiful and compelling music. Learn also about some of today’s brightest stars, including Caroline Shaw, Andrea Ramsey, and Ysaye Barnwell.

So You Want to be a Conductor?

Led by: Paul Rardin

Learn what goes on behind the scenes as conductors prepare rehearsals and concerts. In this hands-on session, students will learn the basic concepts of score study, breath preparation, and conducting patterns, and how these patterns can be used to show tempo, dynamics, articulation, and phrasing. Each student will conduct the other members of the class in a short piece.

The Inclusive Choir: Welcoming All Singers

Led by: Dustin Cates

Explore strategies for helping your choir to be a welcoming environment for all students. Does your dress code reinforce traditional gender roles (“women wear a dress, men wear a tux”)? Does the language used in rehearsal do the same? Does the repertoire include texts offering different perspectives? Learn how choirs across the country are effectively adjusting to the needs of our singers.

Centering Your Breath: Mindfulness for the Performer

Led by: Alex DeVaron

Do you get anxious before or during performances? Do you find yourself getting distracted while singing in choirs? Learn ways to help you fully experience the moment, both in singing and in your everyday life. Take away exercises you can do anywhere to help calm your mind and be present in the world around you.

BeatBoxing and Harmonizing: A Cappella Techniques

Led by: Sebastien Santiago-Rivas

Learn how your group can make its biggest musician and visual impact. Learn arranging, balance, choreography, and song selection from the former music director of Temple University’s own OwlCappella. Hear several selections performed by this 2018 ICCA Mid-Atlantic Champion ensemble.

International Phonetic Alphabet: One System for All Languages

Led by: Mitos Andaya Hart

IPA is the great common denominator for learning pronunciation of foreign languages. Choirs who master this alphabet learn music in any language quickly and effectively. Learn the basic characters and discover their application to a well-known choral piece.

Making an Entrance: The College Music Audition

Led by: Marcus DeLoach

What repertoire should singers prepare for their audition? Which piece should they sing first? What should they wear? Hear from a distinguished college voice professor what he listens and looks for in a successful audition. Several students will have the opportunity to present an informal trial audition and receive constructive feedback.

Solo Voice Masterclass

Led by: Kathryn Leemhius

Several students who have studied voice privately will have the opportunity to sing a prepared piece for a distinguished college voice professor. All students will learn important techniques to improve alignment, breathing, airflow, resonance, and diction. This session is a must for singers wishing to pursue a career in vocal performance.

Conducting Re-Charge for Teachers

Led by: Paul Rardin

This special session offers teachers a chance to refresh their techniques in gesture, score study, and rehearsal techniques. Exercises in breathing, body movement, and hand-independence will serve as useful take-aways to be used again throughout the school year. We’ll leave lots of time for questions you’ve accumulated during your time in the classroom.
