Destination Overview

Asian Culture
Japan Now

Japan’s rebirth following the devastation of World War II launched a period of unprecedented economic growth that established Japan as one of the world’s great industrial powers. Beginning in the 1990s, however, deflation and falling asset prices initiated an economic slump now known as the “lost decade” from which Japan has yet to truly emerge.

Today, even with the infamous lost decade, Japan ranks among the world leaders. It has the third highest GDP in the world, behind only the United States and China. It is the fourth-largest exporter on the globe with brands synonymous with quality and innovation. Since World War II, Japan has committed itself to peace, but its relationships with its neighbors—China, in particular—are sometimes strained. Though Japan is the mature power there, China, India, and others ascending in Asia are far larger. This duality may define the future for Japan—a giant in a region of emerging giants all gunning for its spot on top.
