Celebrating National Women Support Women Day – A Call to Empower

By Mary Howerton, WorldStrides FEmpowerment Member

December 1st is a day that holds profound significance for women across the globe, as we are thrilled to celebrate National Women Support Women Day. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the progress we’ve made, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the work that still lies ahead in empowering women in the workplace.

“Women for women” is not just a powerful cliché; it’s a rallying cry for solidarity and support. This National Women Support Women Day, let’s seize the opportunity to strengthen the bonds within our WorldStrides community. Whether you believe in setting aside a day exclusively for women or advocating for a world where gender knows no bounds, let’s unite on this day to uplift and amplify the voices of our female identifying colleagues.

In the spirit of the upcoming celebration, let’s reflect on the historical significance of December 1. Dating back to 1909, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours and better pay, this day has been a catalyst for change. Over the years, the march evolved, demanding voting rights and an end to violence against women. Today, women worldwide continue to march, advocating for equality, justice, and peace for all.

WorldStride’s FEmpowerment Employee Resource Group plays a vital role in aligning with the spirit of National Women Support Women Day. We are here to break down barriers, foster inclusivity, and empower the incredible women within our organization. Let’s use this day to reaffirm our commitment to each other and to those who paved the way for the progress we enjoy today.

Remember, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day in 1975, making it a global celebration. In 2014, it became an official holiday in almost 100 countries, highlighting the worldwide commitment to advancing gender equality.

Moreover, National Women Support Women Day, established in 2018 by Amy O’Donnell, aligns seamlessly with our mission. This annual event pays tribute to influential women across various fields, echoing our commitment to recognizing the accomplishments of women in arts, politics, business, and beyond.

Please join the members of our FEmpowerment Employee Resource Group in using this day to not only celebrate but to reinvigorate our dedication to supporting one another. Reach out, express your solidarity, and let your fellow women colleagues know that they are not alone in their journey. Together, we can continue to break barriers and create a workplace where everyone thrives.

Wishing you all a meaningful National Women Support Women Day!
