Secure the documents you need for takeoff

Every study abroad journey starts with a valid passport—and for many destinations, a visa too. While requirements vary by country and program length, one rule applies across the board: your passport should be valid for at least six months after your program ends. Processing times can be longer than expected, so don’t wait—secure your documents early to avoid unnecessary stress.

Budgeting

Plan ahead for potential shipping, notary, or translation costs. A new U.S. passport costs around $165 (standard adult). Visa fees vary by country but can range from $25 to $350+.

Passport

Passport processing can take 4–6 weeks depending on the season. Expedited service is available for an additional fee. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your program end date—be sure to double-check the expiration date.

Stay informed while abroad

While our team will always keep you informed of incidents that occur in your study abroad destination, we encourage all U.S. citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) offered by the U.S. Department of State. This free service helps you receive important updates about your destination, including travel advisories, safety alerts, and local embassy support.
