Kinesiology – Health: Study & Intern Semester

Each course is worth 6 UWA credit points, which is the equivalent to 3 - 4 US credits (as determined by your home institution).

You'll enroll in an internship for credit that will entail at least 100 contact hours during the course of the semester.

You'll enroll in 3 - 4 UWA courses, including the Science Work Placement (SCIE2205) course. This course involves completing an internship for credit, which our team will source for you.

Each course is worth 6 UWA credit points, which is equivalent to 3 - 4 US credits (as determined by your home institution).

In Australia, undergraduate degrees are 3 years instead of 4, so the first-level courses dive right into material specific to that discipline, without too much intro-level context. The undergraduate course levels at UWA are 1000, 2000, and 3000.

Use the following to guide your course selection:

• 1000-level courses as sophomore level

• 2000-level courses as junior level

• 3000-level courses as senior level

• 4000-level courses are restricted to honors students

• 5000-9000 is postgraduate (with a few exceptions for courses that are cross-listed as both undergraduate and postgraduate)

Content in the 2000- and 3000-level courses will be very advanced and you must be confident that you have the required background knowledge before taking them. Your eligibility to enroll in courses will be determined by UWA faculty based on previous coursework reflected on your college transcript(s). For courses that have prerequisites, they will look for closely matching courses you’ve previously taken.

The internship will entail at least 100 contact hours during the course of the semester. To complete the placement process, you will upload your resume and cover letter to your student portal and one of our Internship Program Managers will meet with you in a Career Advising Session to discuss this aspect of your program with you and help you make edits to your resume and cover letter for placement.

Placement Opportunities:

• For students with an exercise science and sports medicine focus you could be placed with a local Australian rules football team. Students will experience first-hand the sports medicine culture in an Australian rules football club by engaging in numerous activities, including providing assistance in performance and conditioning activities within the club by conducting fitness assessments and interpreting results, and developing exercise prescriptions for injured athletes.

• For other health studies related majors, internships focus on supporting organizations delivering various public health programs. These can include programs related to cancer prevention, healthy eating and exercise in schools, pre-diabetic intervention, and other global health initiatives addressed in Australia.

• Other options in the industry may be available but can be limited and depend on the time of year you’re participating.

Unique course opportunities in addition the internship:

• Exercise Physiology (SSEH2260): This course explores physiology in respect to exercise. Topics covered include pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange and transport, as well as the cardiovascular system. Students learn about energy systems and how macronutrients contribute to energy during rest and exercise, with a focus on ATP production, and will also gain practical skills in assessing blood pressure, 12-lead electrocardiography, spirometry, and conducting sub-maximal and maximal exercise tests.

• Psychology of Motivation (SSEH2270): This course emphasizes the motivational correlates of involvement in physical activity, sport, and other health behavior. Students explore topics such as motivation, communication, self-concept, competition and cooperation, physical literacy, health-related persuasion, stress and resilience, performance psychology, and exercise and well-being.

• Applied Nutrition for Sport, Exercise and Health (SSEH2280): In this course, students explore key topics for understanding and applying nutrition science in diverse contexts, including the biochemistry of food and the macronutrients and micronutrients in our diet, nutrition and physical activity, the optimization of human performance, and nutrition and public health messaging, in an effort to enhance the general understanding of healthy nutrition in our communities.

• Applied Sports Science and High Performance Sport (SSEH3554): Through the exploration of both team and individual sports, this course uses real-world scenarios to facilitate the practical application of sports science concepts, providing students with insights into the physical demands of different sports, the biomechanical principles underlying movement, strategies for enhancing skill acquisition, and the psychological factors influencing performance, to develop a holistic perspective on the role of sports science in high-performance settings.
