Semester at University of Reading

Students are required to enroll in 30 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System) credits per term as determined by the University of Reading. The majority of courses are worth 10 ECTS. Per the University of Reading, 10 ECTS credits are considered equivalent to 6 U.S. semester credits/9 U.S. quarter units. 5 ECTS credits are considered equivalent to 3 U.S. semester credits/4 U.S. quarter units.

Credit transfer policies surrounding ECTS vary across US universities and students are strongly encouraged to consult with their home university regarding the transfer of 5 ECTS and 10 ECTS courses, respectively.

In accordance with our enrollment policy and possible visa requirements require you must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by your home institution, for the duration of the program.

The transcript from Reading will reflect ECTS credits for each course. Please be in touch with your U.S. university regarding credit transfer for this program.

You'll enroll in 3 - 6 courses for the semester, for a total of 30 ECTS Credits. Classes are lecture style with a seminar (smaller group) following the lecture. Focus at University of Reading is on individual study.

Most courses are taught and assessed in full in either semester 1 or semester 2.

• Semester 1 = fall semester

• Semester 2 = spring semester

A small number of courses may be taught over multiple terms. Awarded credit for partial completion of these courses must be approved by the host university's instructor, to be determined during the add/drop period once onsite (fall only).

Course Codes: Each course has a unique 6 or 7 digit code (EX: HS3STA)

• The first two letters refer to the department the course is being offered through (HS=History, PO = Politics, MM = Management, etc.)

• The first number refers to the level (1= First year, 2= Second year, 3 = Third year)

• The last three numbers/letters refer to the unique number assigned to the class

• If there is no number and the letter M is included (ex: CLM***), then the module is postgraduate level. Postgraduate level modules are not generally available to study abroad students.

Students should only choose courses from the linked Reading catalog. Courses found elsewhere may not be approved for study abroad students. We offer course level recommendations for the courses listed in the Reading Module Catalog. Please note that the course level recommendations are based on the Reading module level classifications of a 1, 2, or 3 level, which correspond with the three year bachelor's degree cycle.

Courses classified as level 2 and level 3 are recommended as upper division and recommended for juniors and seniors with 3000- and 4000-level of experience in the subject. These recommendations are intended to facilitate the determination of course equivalencies by advisors and credential evaluators at participants' U.S. home institutions.

If you choose to participate in the academic year, you'll be required to obtain a student visa prior to departure for an additional fee.

If you do not meet the 3.0 minimum GPA requirement, you may submit a letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose to be considered for an exception.
