Semester at RMIT University

Each course is worth 12 RMIT credit points, which is equivalent to 3-4 US credits.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of your home institution. Our enrollment policy and possible visa implications require you to maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by your home institution, during your program.

Your transcript will reflect RMIT credit points for each of your courses. Please be in touch with your U.S. university regarding credit transfer.

You'll enroll in 3 - 4 course for the semester. You may select courses at the City Campus and the Brunswick Campus. The Brunswick campus is approximately 20 minutes via public transportation from the city.

Your eligibility to enroll in courses will be determined by RMIT faculty based on previous coursework reflected on your college transcript(s). For courses that indicate prerequisites, RMIT will review your transcript to ensure you have taken closely matching courses.

How to search for courses:

• Read the guidelines posted on RMIT University’s website and then search for courses using the “Course Search” link

• Semester 1 = February – June (US Spring Semester)

• Semester 2 = July – November (US Fall Semester)

In Australia, undergraduate degrees are 3 years instead of 4, so the first-level courses dive right into material specific to that discipline, without too much intro-level context. Use the following course level guidelines when selecting your courses:

• 1000-level courses as sophomore level

• 2000-level courses as junior level

• 3000-level and 4000-level courses as senior level

Content in the 3000- and 4000-level courses will be very advanced, and you must be confident that you have the required background knowledge before taking them.

Courses labeled as “recommended” will be quickly approved for enrollment by RMIT faculty. Courses labeled as “restricted” will require an additional approval process, and you may be denied approval if you do not meet the prerequisite requirements (these can include prerequisite courses, the subject you major in, class standing, etc.). You will want to read the course description carefully and ensure that your transcript reflects the background needed for the course. Design courses (VART, GRAP, ARCH courses) require a portfolio to be submitted, to be reviewed by RMIT faculty before approval is granted.

Program eligibility: If your GPA is between 2.0 - 2.5, we encourage you to apply as exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Unique course opportunities:

• COMM2244 Writing for Videogames: This course provides students with a foundation for the writing and communication of narrative and visual concepts in videogames. You will explore the fundamentals of game narrative with reference to both traditional and new media. 

• HUSO1207 Australian Society in a Global Context : This course helps students to understand and critically analyze Australian society and develop forward-thinking responses to some of its biggest challenges. You will explore concepts such as quality of life, merit, privilege, disadvantage, and equality as they relate to economic inequality, work, education, disability, gender, and housing in Australia. 

• MKTG1089 Sport Marketing: In this course, marketing strategies are explored and applied to the connection of sport and business. A strategic sport marketing perspective is developed and related to the marketing actions of sport organizations at local and global levels, as well as considering businesses and agencies undertaking marketing activities through an association with sport. 

• GRAP2815 Fashion and Dress: Students in this course explore what is meant by fashion and dress, and how these meanings are informed by and challenge diverse social-cultural and aesthetic practices and histories. The course gives a foundation for understanding the ways in which we theorize and engage with fashion and dress, and allows you to critically engage with these concepts as part of the design process.
