The University of Georgia is revolutionizing the experience of first-year students with Connect Abroad: Discover, a spring break abroad program designed exclusively for freshmen. This year, a cohort of 32 first-year UGA students traveled to Morocco for nine days of exploration and connection.

UGA - Student Group Visit in Traditional Andalusian Courtyard with Moorish Architecture

Students began in Marrakech, where they experienced the bustling energy of the Jemaa el-Fnaa souk, discovered the lavish grounds and architecture of Bahia Palace, and got a special glimpse of the grandeur of Morocco’s royal past at the Saadian Tombs.

In Meknes, the group explored the world-famous medina, learned how to cook an authentic Moroccan tagine during a hands-on cooking class, and discovered the ruins of Volubilis, a once-flourishing Roman city.

Experiences like this become some of the most memorable moments for travelers.  “I didn’t know anyone else who was going,” shared Annie, one of the UGA students. She noted that the group “bond[ed] so quickly” because “even if we come from different backgrounds, what we all have in common is the want to travel and to understand these different cultures and perspectives.”

Beyond sightseeing, students appreciated the opportunity to connect with each other in moments large and small and reflect on the experience as a whole. One extra special experience included meeting with other students studying abroad in Morocco with WorldStrides for an iftar dinner. The meal featured local favorites like harira, dates, chebakia pastries, and mint tea, offering students a chance to connect with peers from other home institutions while experiencing the warmth of Moroccan hospitality.
