WorldStrides hosted 18 undergraduate engineering students from Texas A&M University for two weeks in Galway, Ireland, to explore how engineering, research, manufacturing, renewable energy, and sustainability come together in real-world situations.

Representing disciplines including mechanical, industrial, civil, computer, and petroleum engineering, the students traded the classroom for university laboratories, company visits, manufacturing facilities, and renewable energy sites across the Galway region.

At the University of Galway, students received an introduction to the university’s Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety program and toured mechanical and civil engineering laboratories, where they learned about current research, testing, renewable energy, and sustainability. They were then able to pair these academic experiences with industry visits designed to connect students directly with a range of engineering applications and professional pathways.

At Smart Reactors, a leading medical device company, students explored medical technology, innovation, and engineering leadership. A factory tour at EireComposites offered a firsthand look at advanced composite manufacturing and industrial operations, while a meeting with OCC Construction gave the group valuable insight into how engineering principles are applied in the construction industry.

As WorldStrides Resident Director Karen Appel Stefoni shared during the program, “Real-world learning is one of the most valuable parts of studying abroad.” The Smart Reactors visit gave students the opportunity to hear directly from industry professionals and see how concepts learned in the classroom are put into practice.

Texas A&M University - Students Learn About Wind Energy Operations at Renewable Energy Facility

One of the program’s standout experiences took students to Galway Wind Park, where they saw renewable energy infrastructure in action and learned more about Ireland’s transition toward a lower-carbon energy system.

The group walked nearly nine kilometers around the wind park—turning an academic discussion about renewable energy into an experience they could see, explore, and understand firsthand. The visit gave students a firsthand look at the complexity behind a major renewable energy project while also highlighting the role wind energy can play for the environment and surrounding communities.

Standing next to those turbines really puts things into perspective. The students got to see up close how a project like this actually comes together — the planning, the logistics, the sheer scale of it.

And the learning extended beyond engineering.

Students also had time to experience Galway and the surrounding region through a guided city tour, a visit to the Aran Islands, local food and cultural experiences, and time to explore the city together.

Together, the academic, industry, and cultural experiences gave students a broader view of how engineering research, manufacturing, innovation, and sustainability intersect within Ireland’s rapidly evolving engineering landscape.

For this Texas A&M group, Galway became more than a study abroad destination. It became a place to see their chosen field in action, consider new career pathways, experience engineering through a global lens, and connect with one another beyond the classroom.
