Students on program

Cornell University and our Global Experiences team worked to create a program that combined international business, sustainability, and equity to better understand the cocoa industry in Ghana.

A young woman folds a red and gold candy wrapper with care, surrounded by others doing the same in a candy factory. She wears a hairnet and gloves.

On their first company visit, the students participated in a factory tour of Kamini Chocolates with an opportunity for a hands-on experience assembling and wrapping chocolates. CEO and Founder, Lucy Afari, spoke to the group about owning her own business as a woman as well as the continuing education and internship opportunities she facilitates.

Lucy spoke about the company’s commitment to creating quality chocolates while minimizing environmental impact and promoting social responsibility based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Lucy also happens to be an alumnus of Cornell University. As a special addition, the cohort held a mini ceremony for Lucy, honoring her for excellence in entrepreneurship.

After the visit, students looked into internship opportunities in Ghana and were inspired to further their education and study with Lucy.

In addition, the group visited Tetteh Cocoa Farm and Aburi Botanical Gardens to learn about how cocoa was first brought to Ghana as well as the planting and harvesting process.
