A cohort of Nutritional Sciences students from the Oklahoma State University joined WorldStrides to spent 10 days exploring Japan’s bustling cities, beautiful countryside, and unparalleled food scene.
The group began in Kyoto, where daily morning classes were complemented by behind-the-scenes visits to local food and nutrition organizations and a delicious food tour through the Nishiki Market. Students also received a thorough introduction to Japanese culture with an authentic cooking class, visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine, and a guided tour of nearby Amanohashidate.
Students also enjoyed a hands-on workshop at an urban rooftop farm, took an early morning walk through the famed Tsukiji fish market, explored the famous Asakusa district, and sat for a traditional tea ceremony.
One major highlight of the experience for the group happened in Tokyo, during an interactive lecture and discussion session at Quantum Flowers and Foods, a sustainable plant breeding company. There, students learned about innovative developments in agriculture, microbial engineering, and sustainable food production and witnessed firsthand the vital role of seed breeding in several important global initiatives, including food security and climate resilience.
“We were impressed by the students’ insightful questions, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in the future of biotechnology”.
