The People That Make the Place

Kate H.

How did your relationships abroad shape your experience?

The relationships I formed were the most integral part of my study abroad experience and something that I cherish deeply. Because I didn’t know anyone else studying in Madrid, I was nervous about embarking on this journey by myself, despite being so excited to go. It felt like I was a freshman in college again, but this time in a new country with a different language.

I was also concerned about being homesick at first, but having so much to do the second I arrived immediately kept those feelings at bay. Naturally, there were a few times I missed home, but I was so happy in Madrid that those moments were minimal.

Immediately upon arrival, I met several other WorldStrides students at the Madrid airport. I quickly learned that everyone else felt just as apprehensive, which created a safe and welcoming environment. Studying abroad is such a niche experience, and because everyone is in the same boat, all anyone wants to do is meet people and make friends.

I was lucky enough to be placed in an apartment with five other girls, who quickly became my best friends. On that first day, we were exhausted and jet-lagged, yet so happy and excited for the four months ahead. These five girls became people I could lean on and trust while we all adjusted to our new lives.

The first few days were understandably a little overwhelming as we navigated the city, but having each other made the experience much less stressful and helped us adapt faster. Acclimating to a new city, school, and overall way of living is always better when you get to experience it with friends.

One of the best parts about these relationships was getting the opportunity to travel together throughout Europe. Traveling like that teaches you a lot about yourself—how you plan a trip, the activities you enjoy, and how you navigate traveling with others. I’m truly grateful for that chapter of my life, where I spent almost every weekend exploring Europe with my friends.

Beyond the friendships I built, I also formed a strong connection with the Madrid WorldStrides staff. They made me feel comfortable from the second I set foot in Madrid until the day I departed. Knowing such an incredible team was there for us was immensely comforting. Whether we needed local recommendations or had a maintenance question, they were always eager to help. I was truly sad to say goodbye to them at the end of the program!

To anyone preparing for their time abroad and worrying about making friends or connecting with others: know that everyone else is feeling the exact same way. You are stepping into such a unique chapter of your life, and while it is completely normal to feel uneasy, you will find people to connect with and share this incredible experience alongside. My time studying in Madrid may have come to an end, but the relationships I built there are here to stay and have become a truly meaningful part of my life.
