Beyond Roma: Relish in the Wine and Culture of Frascati

Ciara M.

University of Tennessee, Knoxville | Rome

Rome is a legendary city with so much to do, but a 20-minute train ride away lies a quaint historic town that boasts some of the most tasteful wine in the region—Frascati. Come with me for a day immersed in peace and tranquility on the slopes of Lazio, Italy!

Scenic view of a colorful cityscape in Rome, Italy, with a bright blue sky and lush vegetation.

Just steps away from the train station, see miles of colorful Italy stretched out before you, with Roman sights like Piazza Venezia and St. Peter’s Basilica in the distance

It’s Carnival in Italy! See the whole town outside soaking up the sun and festivities, with the kids running around in costumes and confetti being thrown everywhere.

A moment of silence with an empty side street in the shade of the high-noon sun before we head to the busy generational winery.

Step onto the property of a nine-generation family-owned winery and see the age of the region reflected in the crumbling but lively buildings in the distance.

The familial home of the winemaker surrounded by greenery, flourishing even in the winter months high up on the hills.

A picturesque landscape of green hills and cultivated land, with a city and mountain range in the distance under a bright blue sky.

The elderly winemaker speaks to me in Italian here, pointing to various spots in the distance and giving me the detailed history of the region and his family’s property—he speaks no English, and I, very little Italian, but I listen and learn nonetheless.

A tour of the vineyards, where we see the dormant Olive trees in the distance. But better, we are introduced to the regional plants like the yellow Mimosa Tree above—a refreshing and warm smell exudes from them, shocking for February.

At every corner of this vineyard and winery, beauty exudes from the space. Italian nature ignores the winter and pushes through, putting my group and myself right into “La Dolce Vita”.

Our group sits all together in the warm sun, ready to try two crisp wines and an olive oil made entirely on sight, fresh and chilled from the cellar.

We are walked through the process of “tasting” a wine, including looking at the color of it in the sunlight to get a better idea of the grape skins used.

There is fresh produce and bright color on every hillside of the vineyard, adding an irresistible charm to the whole experience!

We conclude at a big feast table with a delicious meal of pasta amatriciana and potatoes. There was singing, truffle tastings, and friends to be made with the big group of us at lunch!

Mirror selfie! Thanks for coming along with me to see the absolute charm of this small town right outside of Rome.
