Step into the Italy of the gladiator, when the city of Rome achieved its early grandeur. The Roman Republic and its successor, the Roman Empire, are among the first great societies. Their history offers a fascinating look at topics that cross many disciplines: early statesmanship, Latin literature, early construction, war and crisis (“Et tu, Brute?”), and more. (Many groups also choose to visit Greece to explore this time period.)
The Italian tradition of dressing to impress, or “la bella figura” is an important part of its history, its culture, and its economy today. Milan, the center of Italian design, is a top fashion capital, and the brands headquartered there—including Versace, Prada, and Armani—are nothing short of legendary. Explore these major fashion houses, the city’s prestigious shopping districts, and the up-and-coming designers who’ve been inspired by the Italian aesthetic.
Eat and drink your way through Italy? How could you resist! For a serious student of food and wine, Italy is a mecca. Explore the cuisines and vintages unique to regions such as the Amalfi coast, Tuscany, and Puglia with classes, visits to local farms and wineries, and of course, lots of tasting.
The two centuries of the Italian Renaissance left the world with a catalog of art that boggles the mind. See the genius of Michelangelo, da Vinci, Rafael, Caravaggio, and Bernini (and so many others) on display in its many forms, and explore the cultural and scientific revolution that accompanied it.
Modern Italy is both a well-preserved monument to its historical legacies and an experience in living well. Ancient traditions combine with a spiritual pride expressed in the art, industry, and food that epitomize what we have come to know as La Bella Vita. (After all, even the most well-known parts of Italy’s economy are uniquely Italian—fashion, wine, and powerful cars!) There are challenges to study as well, including a pressing immigration problem and a continuing struggle with unemployment. And somehow, every topic is more wonderful after a leisurely afternoon espresso.
