The Road To Rio: 7 Tips For Greatness

I’m sure Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Alex Morgan and so many more Olympic athletes can all attest to the challenges leading up to the Olympics. Each Olympic athlete has a different upbringing and backstory, but one thing that is consistent is that they worked hard and were determined to reach the Olympics, compete at the highest level, claim a gold medal or in Michael Phelps’ case 18. I’m sure these athletes all endured pain and injury, whether that be a major or minor setback in their career. What makes them great Olympic athletes is that they don’t give up, they don’t settle, and they don’t use excuses.

As Rio de Janeiro prepares for tonight’s 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony, we made a list of ways you can achieve greatness, whether your goals are to compete in the Olympics, attend the college of your dreams, become a doctor, or travel the world.

Set a goal.

Goals give you focus, help you overcome procrastination, and give you motivation. Write them down somewhere where you can see them every day. Don’t be afraid to make changes to them as you progress!

Make a schedule

A schedule will serve as a blueprint for your day and help you track your progress. Making a schedule also allows for better time management and helps you feel accomplished.

Eat healthy

You’ve probably had teachers tell you to “eat a good breakfast” the day of a major test. They’re right! Healthy eating habits will aid in helping you maintain a good level of general health and increase performance and focus.

Get enough sleep

You’ve probably also had a teacher tell you to make sure you get a good night’s sleep before that big test. Sleep improves concentration and productivity and plays an important role in your health. If you’re well rested, you can perform better, whether you’re taking a test or preparing for the Olympic finals.

Get moving

Physical activity, whether it’s a workout or a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, combats health condition, improves mood, boost energy and makes you stronger. Try to get some movement in most days!

Work with a coach/mentor

Find someone you admire in your field of interest. Maybe they have competed at the level you wish to reach or have the job you hope to get one day. A coach or mentor will help develop your full potential, and bring enthusiasm and motivation to do well.

Max effort

You’ve reached the moment that you’ve trained for, worked for, or studied for. Now that you’re there, put forth you best effort. You can do it!
