Kameel Premhid On Why Students Benefit From Our Oxbridge Academics Programs
Our Oxbridge Academic Programs has welcomed intellectually adventurous students to its spring and summer study programs in Europe and the United States for more than 30 years. Students live and learn in centers of learning and culture such as Oxford and Cambridge, Paris, Boston, New York, and Los Angeles. Our programs enable students to immerse themselves in the academic or creative subjects of their choice while discovering the extraordinary cities in which they are located—all under the guidance of renowned local academics and creative professionals.
We recently spoke with Kameel Premhid, a Rhodes Scholar who taught journalism for Oxbridge at OxPrep. Premhid told us about his time as part of Oxbridge Academic Programs, and why he believes students benefit from our unique programs.
WorldStrides: Tell us a bit about yourself and your involvement with Oxbridge Academics.
Kameel Premhid: I’m currently a barrister/advocate in training in Johannesburg, South Africa. I’m a Rhodes Scholar, and was at Oxford from 2013 to 2015. Many Rhodes Scholars have been affiliated with Oxbridge Academics as its founder, Professor James Basker, has endeavored to keep that connection going.
I taught for Oxbridge for two successive years at OxPrep based at Oriel College. I taught Journalism. Even though my course at OxPrep did not reflect my academic training (I read for degrees in Politics, Law, International Relations, and Higher Education Policy), it was a great intersection of all these interests and reflected my professional experience as a columnist for news publications located in South Africa and the U.K.
WorldStrides: You taught a Journalism class for Oxbridge Academics last year. What were some of the highlights?
Premhid: Producing a course wide newspaper, having joint lessons with the law and photography classes, and the London selfie challenge.
WorldStrides: What are some of the benefits students receive by being part of an Oxbridge program?
Premhid: Oxbridge is unlike any other summer program. It is academically rigorous and seriously fun. Students benefit significantly from piquing academic interests in subjects that may not be offered at their school, taught by some of the brightest people I came to know. Apart from the possible professional benefits, students get to live abroad and independently getting a taste of collegiate life and developing their personal strengths and attributes in a supportive, caring environment.
WorldStrides: Why should parents consider Oxbridge Academics programs? How about students?
Premhid: It is an wonderful opportunity for their children to benefit from excellent tutelage, an unrivaled setting, and caring faculty and staff. It truly is a home away from home for students who develop lifelong connections with their peers, teachers, and Oxford itself.
WorldStrides: What’s your favorite place you’ve ever traveled and why?
Premhid: Italy. Carbs.
WorldStrides: Where do you want to travel that you haven’t been yet?
