Day2Arrive Lisbon – Santarem – Fatima
Church of St. StephenWe will be met at the airport by our WorldStrides Tour Director where we will board our own private coach and be transferred to Santarem to visit the Church of St. Stephen.
Chapel of the ApparitionsNext we continue on to Fatima, we will enjoy a brief introductory tour. We will visit the small slanted-roof shed known as the Chapel of the Apparitions. Inside stands a single white column marking the spot where a small holm oak once grew. An image of the Virgin Mary reputedly appeared over this oak on May 13, 1917, when she is said to have spoken to three shepherd children.
BasilicaThis morning, we will tour the pristine white neoclassical Basilica and the Little Chapel and pray at the graves of Jacinta, Francesco, and Sr. Lucia.
Hamlet of Aljustrel and ValinhosWe will also see the small Hamlet of Aljustrel and Valinhos. We will walk the Stations of the Cross and pray in the Chapel of Calvary.
Evening Procession of the Pilgrim StatueWe then join the Evening Procession of the Pilgrim Statue. We will have Mass today at the Fatima Shrine.
Day4Fatima – Salamanca
Plaza Mayor & Universidadeaving Fatima, we will travel east to Salamanca, Spain’s primary University City. We begin our tour in the Plaza Mayor, one of Spain’s largest and grandest squares, before walking past the Iglesia de San Martin and La Casa de las Conchas to the Universidad, founded in 1218 by Alfonso IX.
Cathedral Vieja and Cathedral NuevaWe will enter the Patio de Escuelas to admire the Plateresque architectural style of the buildings, before entering the Escuelas Menores Building to view the huge zodiac fresco, The Salamanca Sky. We continue with a visit to the adjoining Cathedral Vieja and Cathedral Nueva. The two cathedrals are unusually built side by side and offer a contrast in styles, ranging from Baroque, Romanesque and Renaissance. In the Old Cathedral, the 53-panel altarpiece, painted by Nicolas Florentino in lustrous colors, frames the statue of Salamanca’s patron saint, the 12th century Virgen de la Vega. Our walk continues through Salamanca’s old quarter and we will view the 1st century Puente Romano, the Convento de las Duenas, Iglesia-Convento de San Esteban, and the magnificent Torre del Clavero.
Day5Day Trip to Santiago
Cathedral of SantiagoToday we will go to pilgrimage site of Santiago de la Compostela. Upon arrival, we will visit the Cathedral of Santiago and the rest of our day here will be at leisure so as to allow ample time for religious devotion and prayer.
Day6Salamanca – Burgos – Santander
SantanderToday we drive to Santander. En route, we stop in Burgos to visit the historic Cathedral. Our day continues as we drive through Old Castille to Burgos, time-honored for being the birthplace of El Cid, the champion of the Spanish Reconquest.
Catedral de Santa MariaUpon our arrival, we will visit the impressive Catedral de Santa Maria, begun in 1221, and one of the most celebrated churches in Europe. Built in diverse styles, predominantly flamboyant Gothic, it took 300 years to complete. The 16th- century Chapel of Condestable, behind the main altar, is one of the best examples of Isabelline-Gothic architecture.
Day7Day Trip to Garabandal
Walking Tour of San Sebastian de GarabandalIn San Sebastian de Garabandal, today we will first take a Walking Tour of the area possible having time to speak with villagers who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. We will have Mass in Garabandal and the remainder of the day is yours to spend at leisure exploring the city.
Day8Santander – Loyola – Lourdes
Santuario de Loiola (Loyola)Today we will depart for Lourdes. En route, we will stop in Loyola to visit the imposing Santuario de Loiola (Loyola), a basilica dedicated to St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits. Here, in the Chapel of the Conversion, young Ignatius had a profound religious experience while recovering from a war injury.
Lourdes ShrineThe 17th century basilica has a stunning Churrigueresque dome and a circular nave, in which almost every surface is richly carved. At Lourdes, we will enjoy mass at the world-famous Shrine.
HolyToday, we will continue following the life of St. Bernadette today as we walk to the Holy Mill, where she was born, and to the “Cachot” which is where Bernadette was living when she saw the Apparitions.
Parish Church & Hospital OratoryLater we visit the Chapel where she had her first Holy Communion and the Parish Church where she was baptized and visit the Hospital Oratory.
Stations of the CrossIn the afternoon, we will walk the Stations of the Cross, before participating in the Candle Light Rosary Procession. We will have Mass at the Lourdes Shrine.
Day10Depart from Toulouse
