Here’s a sample list of some of the many attractions and activities the students will see and do on this trip. This trip is going to be so much fun and the students are going to learn so much!
Our trip includes a stop at the Pentagon Memorial where students will walk through the site that honors the 184 victims who died during the September 11, 2001 attacks at the Pentagon. The memorial shows the timeline of these victims’ ages ranging from just 3 years old to age 71.
Students will walk in the footsteps of our nation’s leaders as they explore Capitol Hill. Tour the underground tunnels to see where lawmakers meet, take in the miles of books at the Library of Congress, and sit on the steps of the highest court in the land, the U.S. Supreme Court.
Students will learn the true meaning of sacrifice as they walk the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. They’ll take part in one of our country’s greatest traditions as they witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This is sure to be one of the most impactful moments of your Washington, D.C. trip.
Read some of Jefferson’s famous writings and gain a new respect for his foresight he had while writing the Declaration of Independence. Discuss how this first Secretary of State impacted the way America developed as a nation.
Students will contemplate President Lincoln’s accomplishments as they read his famous speeches inscribed on the walls. They’ll also relive history as they stand in the same spot where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
Experience the memorial dedicated to the nation’s most famous civil rights activist who preached tolerance regardless of race, belief, or class. Become inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s powerful writings that nurtured love across a nation. Students will have the opportunity to take turns reciting the words of Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream” speech.
Explore George Washington’s Estate, the mansion he shared with Martha, his farmland, and where he housed his many
inventions. Visit the education center that showcases the many achievements of our first president.
Take a tour of Thomas Jefferson’s plantation home, as well as the grounds and gardens where he cultivated hundreds of different fruits and vegetables. You’ll be blown away by the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Enjoy a walking tour of Colonial Williamsburg. This exploration will lead you to the Governor’s Palace and allow you to experience different aspects of colonial life as you see the jail, Capitol, and blacksmith.
Drive to Surrender Field, the location where the British surrendered to General Washington’s army, the most decisive event of the American Revolution. Walk to a town where there are still 18th century musket balls lodged in houses.
Walk in the footsteps of Civil War soldiers. Travel back in time to explore the site that is considered to be the turning point of the Civil War. For three days, fierce battles took place culminating on July 3, the bloodiest single battle of the entire war.
Historical interpreters will take you on an interactive journey of the events that started the American Revolution.
