Students will walk in the footsteps of our nation’s leaders as they explore Capitol Hill. Tour the underground tunnels to see where lawmakers meet, take in the miles of books at the Library of Congress, and sit on the steps of the highest court in the land, the U.S. Supreme Court.
Read some of Jefferson’s famous writings and gain a new respect for his foresight he had while writing the Declaration of Independence. Discuss how this first Secretary of State impacted the way America developed as a nation.
Students will contemplate President Lincoln’s accomplishments as they read his famous speeches inscribed on the walls. They’ll also relive history as they stand in the same spot where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Experience the memorial dedicated to the nation’s most famous civil rights activist who preached tolerance regardless of race, belief, or class. Become inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s powerful writings that nurtured love across a nation. Students will have the opportunity to take turns reciting the words of Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream” speech.
Explore George Washington’s Estate, the mansion he shared with Martha, his farmland, and where he housed his many
inventions. Visit the education center that showcases the many achievements of our first president.
Climb aboard replicas of the ships—Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery—that sailed from England to Virginia. See how 17th century colonists lived in a recreated fort and learn what life was like in a Powhatan Indian Village.
Enjoy a walking tour of Colonial Williamsburg. This exploration will lead you to the Governor’s Palace and allow you to experience different aspects of colonial life as you see the jail, Capitol, and blacksmith.
Drive to Surrender Field, the location where the British surrendered to General Washington’s army, the most decisive event of the American Revolution. Walk to a town where there are still 18th century musket balls lodged in houses.
