Yorktown

Founded in 1691, Yorktown was a busy and prosperous seaport. However, Yorktown’s fame comes from the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to General George Washington in 1781, which marked the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. In 1783, the final treaty was signed in Paris, France, ending the Revolutionary War and recognizing American independence. Yorktown also witnessed major Civil War activity and its fortifications held the Union army at bay.
