Pennsylvania – Valley Forge
Explore the area of Pennsylvania where George Washington and thousands of his troops spent the winter of 1777-1778. Learn how determined soldiers survived a winter of disease, hunger, and insufficient supplies at Valley Forge and came out of camp the following summer to pursue the British.
- Explore Valley Forge National Historical Park to see George Washington’s living quarters, and the homes and earthworks Revolutionary War soldiers made. Students also see the Grand Parade, where George Washington’s army was trained while in camp, and Artillery Park, where Revolutionary War weaponry is on display.
- Gain a deeper understanding of daily life at Valley Forge and examine military equipment, colonial relics, and a film at the Valley Forge Historical Society Museum.
- Commemorate the patience and fidelity of the soldiers who wintered Valley Forge at the National Memorial Arch.
Did you know:
- George Washington had several horses throughout the war. Two of these were named “Nelson” and “Blueskin.”
- William Penn was a Quaker who founded Pennsylvania in the 17th century. The Quakers were a large contingent of people in and around Philadelphia at the time of the Revolution.
